Originally named Ashland Shirt Corporation, Gitman is one of the most celebrated and heralded names in American clothing. Founded in Ashland, Pennsylvania, the original company produced and manufactured shirts for a plethora of brands and stores before taking the family name in 1978 to produce their own collections.
Today, Gitman Vintage base their designs on a number of line-books from the late 70s which feature the original drawings and notes on classic Gitman pieces. Each season, they focus on shirts and fabrics from a particular year and update them with slimmer, modern cuts for their growing legion of contemporary followers. Aside from the patterns and fabric, Gitman Vintage also include key details from the original collection, such as double track stitching, chalk buttons, locker loops and the original branded inside label featured on every piece.
In a day and age where many people claim to be ‘re-imagining archive designs’, very few do it as well as Gitman Vintage, with their carefully considered approach to the production of their product. Testament to this is the fact that every piece is expertly crafted in the USA, going through 50 steps using 25 individual pieces to produce a shirt which takes around 80 minutes from start to finish. A far cry from the world of mass produced clothing.
Spring Summer 2012 sees Gitman delve into the archives to use a variety of cottons from across their collections, notably premium Japanese cotton as used in the Boat Print Shirt , Polka Dot Shirt and the Stripe Shirt. All have striking patterns which suit the slim silhouette of the shirt and work well as both a layer piece and a stand-alone shirt. If these subtle patterns aren’t enough, Gitman have produced two camouflage based pieces for the more ‘outlandish’ shirt wearer. Utilising a heavy cotton twill, the Zebra Camo Shirt is robust enough to be worn as an overshirt, while the Camouflage Shirt adds a new dimension to the classic slimmer block retaining the familiar tailored look.
As always, more traditional shirting is the backbone of the collection with the classic Oxford Shirt available in Blue, Red, White and Grey as well as the ever-popular Chambray Shirt in Blue, Green and a crinkle Linen. The collection is rounded off with the obligatory check, this time in the form of an authentic Madras Check in a Red, White and Blue colourway and the classic Seersucker Stripe Shirt in Blue and White
