Jamieson’s of Shetland

Wednesday, February 8th, 2012

Another new brand here at End, Jamieson’s are a family owned business, which has specialised in using wool from the native Shetland sheep for 5 generations. The family are dedicated to the survival of this unique fibre and as each new generation joins the business, this promotion becomes their life’s ambition.

The business was started in the early 1890’s by Robert Jamieson. Over the next century, each generation of Jamieson brought their own skills and ideas – Andrew (Robert’s son) became one of the islands first wool brokers, buying the raw wool clip from the crofters and shipping it to Scotland’s mainland for processing. At the time, Shetland wool was believed to be too fragile to be spun on industrial machinery so it was blended with wool from coarser breeds. The very best blend of ‘Shetland’ yarn produced was only about 60% pure. This blended yarn never fulfilled the family’s dream of 100% pure Shetland knitwear; grown, spun and knitted in the Shetland Isles.

The next generation, Bertie (Andrew’s son) expanded the business in 1952 by opening a retail outlet in Lerwick, Shetland’s capital town. This was the start of the Jamieson Knitwear brand. Original Jamieson’s sweaters were hand-knitted by home workers using blended ‘Shetland yarn. Chasing the life-long dream, Bertie, and his son Peter began to experiment with the spinning of pure Shetland yarn, their efforts were successful and 100% pure Shetland yarn was produced in 1978.

In 1981, they opened Jamieson’s Spinning, Shetland’s only commercial woollen mill. This unique mill, built in Sandness, completes all the stages of yarn production under one roof. The Jamieson family were among the first islanders to utilise computerised knitting technology. Combining this technology with the 100% pure Shetland yarn allows the highly complex traditional Fair Isle patterns to be re-created in an increasing range of both traditional and vibrant contemporary colours.

Today Jamieson’s highly exclusive knits are only available in a handful of places, and we’re very pleased to say that End are one of those. Head over to the Jamieson’s Section now for a proper look.

Woolrich Woolen Mills

Wednesday, February 8th, 2012

Mark McNairy has now been at the helm of Woolrich Woolen Mills for a year, continuing the sterling work of label founder Daiki Suzuki. Mark has managed to retain the brand’s unique aesthetic and ethos, whilst incorporating his own unmistakable style, reworking classic pieces and using archive Woolrich fabrics.

The SS12 collection is a marked step on from the fledgling McNairy range from Autumn/Winter ’11, with the former J. Crew designer putting his own stamp on an exceptional range of outerwear, shirting and legwear. There is a strong focus on the use of premium archive fabrics, which sees Cone Mills denim and a SaxPop cotton/nylon mix – inspired by the famous 60/40 fabric – used throughout the range, and a muted, tonal palette of navy, burgundy and khaki that is prevalent across the collection. As with all previous WWM collections, SS12 explores new levels of functionality, and this is particularly apparent in the novel Newspaper Pocket Shirt, a modern interpretation of the classic workshirt, that showcases the McNairy eye for detail perfectly.

Once again Woolrich Woolen Mills have produced a collection of unique, functional apparel that is ideal for the rigours of every day wear. Definitely not one to be missed.

After a brief hiatus Adidas Consortium is back with a vengeance, first with the ‘Tabula Rasa’ pack, and now with something a little bit special. Adidas was founded in Germany by the great Adi Dassler, and their International HQ has remained in his birth place of Herzogenaurach ever since. Adi Dassler handmade the first Adidas shoes in Herzogenaurach, before the brand grew into a sportswear giant, the decades past, and production in Germany was no longer possible.

For the re-launch of the Consortium range, Adidas have gone back to basics, paying homage to the brands and its founder’s German roots, to produce the first Adidas shoes in Germany for over 50 years.

For this very special project the Consortium team chose to work with the timeless München silhouette, much loved and coveted by Adidas fans over the years. The Made In Germany München will be handmade in the Adidas factory in Scheinfeld, Germany from premium suede and leather. The München will be produced in the original colourway, and come in a 1:1 re-issue of the original box. Nigel Cabourn Spring/Summer ’12

Monday, January 30th, 2012

After the exceptional reaction to our exclusive, behind the scenes look at this season’s Nigel Cabourn Authentic collection, we now have the full range online an available to buy. If that wasn’t enough, we’ve even compiled our own mini ‘look book’, shot in 1940s sepia-tone, in recognition of the WWII influence that runs throughout the collection.

As mentioned in our previous post, the Cabourn SS12 collection takes inspiration from General Montgomery’s Desert Rats, updating classic NC pieces using military cotton drill and waxed cotton in desert tones and authentic camouflage patterns. The result – in our opinion – is one of the most individual and striking collections we have seen in some time, showcasing classic outerwear designs such as the Surface and Aircraft jackets, as well as some of Nigel’s more tailored pieces including the Chittagong Jacket and Peak Vest. Alongside these pieces are Ascent of Cabourn staples such as the Cameraman, Tenzing and Mallory jackets, expertly reworked, innovatively capturing the spirit of the British 8th Army in a way only Nigel can.

Have a quick look through our look book above, but we would advise heading over to the Nigel Cabourn section for a proper look at this outstanding collection.

Nigel Cabourn SS12 – Coming Soon

Friday, January 27th, 2012

Back in the summer of 2011 we made the short trip a mile down the road to Nigel Cabourn’s Garden Studio for an exclusive first viewing of the forthcoming Spring 2012 range, entitled ‘The Desert Rats’. A trip to Nigel’s studio is always a special occasion, and Nigel was (as always!) on fine form, taking us through his new collection based on General Montgomery, leader of The Desert Rats in WWII. The collection truly encapsulates Nigel’s legendary knowledge and passion for authentic product, and it is always an honour to get a full overview of the collection from the man himself.

As you might expect the collection has strong military influences, featuring various officers’ jackets, vests, and combat smocks. Camouflage makes a return to the range, as well as some new ‘Desert Rat’ sand shoes. The collection is finished in a subtle palette of dusky khakis, sands and oranges, perfect for desert combat.

The ‘Desert Rats’ Spring 2012 collection will launch in store and online soon.

Tricker’s for End Hunting Co. Part III – Burnished Toe Cap Brogue & Boot

Friday, January 27th, 2012

We are pleased to reveal the third instalment in our collaboration with English master shoemakers Tricker’s. The latest release is a homage to the English Country Gentleman, a gibson derby shoe and boot with a brogue trimmed toe cap, combining the formal with more casual country styling.

The first style to come from the drawing board of our End Hunting Co. design team is a Toe Capped Gibson Shoe, made on a 4444 last. The premium, burnished leather upper sits atop a black dainite sole unit, and features punched brogue detailing along the toe cap and the signature End Hunting Co. canvas heel pull tab.

The accompany design is brogue toe cap boot on a 4497S last, rarely seen from Tricker’s. The boot pattern comes from the famous Stow with the same brogue detailing around the cap, dainite sole and heel tab as it’s lower height cousin.

Head over to the Tricker’s Section now for a proper look. If the last release was anything to go by, these won’t be about for long!

Levi’s Vintage – Spring Summer 2012

Monday, January 23rd, 2012

Levi’s Vintage Clothing is part of the Levi’s premium ‘XX’ division, focussing on re-creating vintage pieces of American workwear and sportswear, with an unwavering dedication to detail and quality. Each LVC collection documents and celebrates the history of Levi’s clothing, using authentic fits, detailing and fabrics to capture a classic and often nostalgic aesthetic.

The core of every Levi’s Vintage clothing collection is of course the denim. Each pair of LVC jeans is a painstaking re-creation of a particular Levi’s fit from a specific time period, finished with meticulous distressing and washing, which accurately mimics the natural effects of wear. This season we’ve stocked two of the most popular variations of the iconic Levi’s 501 – the 1954 and the ’47 jean – each in two varying states of distress. Also on offer are the slim 505 fit, the skinny 605, as well as chinos and cords, meaning there’s truly something for everyone this season.

Recent seasons have seen LVC expand and develop their collection far beyond jeans as they seek to provide a comprehensive offering of clothing based on iconic pieces from their vast archive of restored and reclaimed garments. The Spring/Summer ’12 collection includes some amazing athletic sports tees, sweatshirts and hoodies, as well as some 1960’s-inspired striped tees that hark back to the heyday of Californian surf culture. The workwear side of the collection is composed of several styles of work shirts in a number of authentic fabrics, these sit alongside pieces such as the 1920’s Sunset Coat, a typically LVC take on the classic chore jacket.

Beams Plus Spring Collection

Thursday, January 19th, 2012

Beams launched in Japan in the mid 70’s as a revolutionary multi faceted clothing manufacturer and retail operation. Beams’ retail operation has now grown to over 100 stores, with several varying concepts, serving the ever changing styles of new generations of Japanese consumers. The Beams Plus concept launched around five years ago, and caters for the more discerning gentleman.

The Beams Plus clothing line focuses on faithfully recreating American classics, using only the finest Japanese fabrics and craftsmanship. The results are a collection outstanding in its depth of range, detailing and quality. Beams Plus has always been one of our favourite collections, highly converted by any clothing enthusiast due to its ground breaking quality and incredibly limited distribution (Limited to Japanese retailers only!) So we were extremely honoured when last year we were invited to Beams HQ in Tokyo to view the forthcoming spring range. So after a fantastic trip, a few thousand air miles, and several months wait, we are extremely pleased to present the Spring 2012 Beams Plus collection…

The Beams Plus range is curated by Kenich Kusanoi (Kenny to his friends!), who’s almost worrying passion for American vintage and outdoor pursuits drives the collection’s concept. Given Kenny’s passion, it is not surprising that the range contains many classic Americans silhouettes such as the Mountain Parka, Oxford Shirt, Plaid shirt and Railroad Vest, all reworked and updated by the Japanese masters.

The Spring 2012 collection focuses on the 1960’s and 70’s, adding in new styles such as the PO Shirt, Double Breasted Blazer and Naval Overcoat to the existing range of American classics. As always, each style is more than a basic re-creation, as Beams update the styles with fabrics old and new, such as Cool Max and Linen Herringbone, all brought together by craftsmen in Japan.
Our favourite styles include the camouflage pants, Summer Mountain Parka, Herringbone PO Shirt, and Naval Overcoat, but with a range this good it is difficult to choose favourites. Head to the Beams Plus section to view the full range, and make your own decisions – if you can!
