Quoddy – Inside The Workshop Video

Wednesday, September 7th, 2011

Conveniently coinciding with our latest delivery from American footwear legends Quoddy, British Film maker Oliver Wilkins has released a behind the scenes video from Quoddy’s workshop in Lewiston, Maine. This unique look into the small factory where the shoes are made offers an incredible insight into the effort and overall craftsmanship that goes into every pair of Quoddy shoes. Looking at the a number of the processes that go into making each pair, we learn about the way the shoes are hand-stitched, soled and then tested by their team of experienced craftsman.

We reckon this short video perfectly demonstrates why Quoddy are one of our favourite shoe-manufacturers, not many brands can boast this sort of incredible hands-on production process, and the results speak for themselves.

Family business Quoddy are one of the finest footwear manufacturers around at the moment, and a real favourite here at End. They take their name from the Passamaquoddy tribe of eastern Maine, and this understanding of local heritage and history is reflected in their authentic North American footwear. Quoddy shoes are expertly crafted, using some of the finest local materials available – such as Horween Chromexcel leather -for maximum durability and comfort, and every pair is hand-stitched to ensure the highest possible level of finishing.

The Autumn/Winter season always brings out the best of Quoddy as they delve into their archives to recreate some of their most enduring outdoor styles. Our latest delivery features a number of these iconic shoes, from all-season classics such as the Boat Chukka, Blucher and Maliseet Oxford to rugged winter silhouettes like the Ring Boot and Grizzly Boot. Every pair features the kind of incredible craftsmanship and finishing we have come to expect from Quoddy with a wide choice of added extras, ideally suited to dealing with bad weather, including sheepskin lining, extra thick crepe rubber and hard-wearing Vibram soles.

Winter Essentials – Part 1

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

Over the next week we are going to be showcasing a few of our favourite winter choices, from jackets, jumpers and knitwear to keep the elements out, to books and magazines to entertain you if you’re snowed in, we’ve tried to explore every avenue in our picks.

We start off with a ‘look’ that’s very current at the moment, based around classic outdoorwear silhouettes such as parkas and hiking boots. The brands that most people tend to choose have a rich heritage and use materials and processes that have been at the fore for generations.

Our second choice is one that started on the terraces in the 80s, when British fans ventured over to Europe for games and came back with talk of ultra-exclusive sportswear labels. The most popular labels often started out purely for sportsmen and women and became popular due to their iconic branding and aspirational quality, exclusivity – and price tag!

Transcending a few influences, our final style in this installment focusses on styles that were designed with functionality very much in mind. Robust materials and construction and simple designs mean that these classics are made to be worn again and again, by some of the most iconic manufacturers around.

Quoddy – Coming Soon

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

The Quoddy name comes from the Passamaquoddy tribe, the imprint left by these original Maine dwellers is massive, and has influenced Quoddy in so many ways. The factory in Perry, sits on the Passamaquoddy Bay, and the techniques used to make their unsurpassed moccasins come directly from age old practices used by the tribe.

Today, Quoddy’s are still made by the Shorey family, Kevin Shorey runs the small factory, carrying on the name after Great-Grandfather Harry Smith Shorey had started the company back in 1909. As was the case 101 years ago each pair is hand sewn, no glue, adhesives or staples are used, so each shoe will perfectly fit your foot, and mould to it with wear.

History aside, Quoddy, and their unparalleled knowledge of moccasin manufactures, means that the styles they produce are second to almost none. Expertly made and brilliantly finished, every shoe that leaves the factory is meticulously checked before it can carry the Quoddy name. The styling is timeless, based on the moccasins worn by the Passamaquoddy, these Maine natives have never followed trends, instead letting their incredible footwear do the talking.

With such a great selection to choose from we opted for the shoes that best represented the Quoddy ethos. From the Grizzly and Ring Boots, made for hunting, through the boat shoes – also including Deck Boots, Chukkas and Bluchers, to the Maliseet Oxford, all of these incredible styles are brilliantly made, showcasing Quoddy’s expertise and quality as well as the vast influence of their native Maine.

With the arrival of Yuketen as well, we are counting ourselves very, very lucky to have both of these great American brands arriving imminently. Expect Quoddy to be available on-line and instore by early April. Do not miss out.
