Yoshida & Company – Porter Luggage

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

Porter is one of the most recognised names in the world of premium luggage manufacture, famous across the world, and the only name to take on your travels in their native Japan. The Porter range is vast and includes almost every conceivable type of bag and wallet – from huge, wheeled cases, to small coin wallets, there is a product for everyone – which is the reason for the brand’s colossal success.

Aside from extremely limited distribution of the Fragment designed Head Porter range, acquiring Porter luggage outside of Japan has always been a nigh on impossible task, but this is all set to change. AW09 sees Porter’s first real foray into the UK market, availability is still very limited with the collection concentrating on key day-to-day pieces including totes, wallets and day bags.

The design is considered and timeless and the finish is of the highest order, it is instantly apparent why this relatively small Japanese brand have the worldwide success they do. Whether your after a larger shoulder bag – featuring detachable compartments for all your essential items, a wallet with all the necessary pockets and folds, or simply somewhere to keep your keys safe, you’ll struggle to find better than Porter.

Delivery is due on 12th November, perfect timing for Xmas-lists and subtle hinting, but numbers are limited so keep your eyes peeled for the official launch online.

Overkill x New Balance – Berlin Wall Pack

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

November 9th 1989 saw millions of people glued to their TV sets, watching one of the most important moments in modern history unfold in front of them as the wall that separated East from West Berlin finally came down, re-uniting a city – and indeed a country – that had been divided for over 40 years. The wall was seen as a physical representation of the Iron Curtain that separated the Eastern Bloc from the West, and finally, after a month of protests the 87 mile long concrete construction finally began to topple.

20 years on, proud Berliners are celebrating this historic moment, and world-famous streetwear store Overkill have chosen to recognise this great event through a highly limited shoe release. Based on New Balance’s revered 577 silhouette, the Berlin Wall pack comes in three colours, representing the 3 sides involved in the fall of the wall. Red for the USSR – symbolising the Eastern Bloc – Blue for the US – who always supported the West, with then President Ronald Regan speaking out against the segregation during a speech a made in Berlin weeks before the wall fell – and a black colourway to represent Berlin’s Bear emblem.

The 577 is made from lightweight mesh and coloured nubuck, showcasing this classic silhouette, while the insole of each shoe features one of the many iconic images of the Wall. The photo differs between the colourways so these are a real draw for collectors, and with numbers so limited we’re sure they will sell out very quickly! We will be releasing more images, prices and confirmed drop dates as the information becomes available…

Gitman Bros. Vintage Collection – Online Now

Monday, October 19th, 2009

The name Gitman Brothers may not necessary be one that is instantly recognised by everyone, but there are few names, if any, that are held in such high regard in shirt making. From their base in Ashland, Pennsylvania, these master shirt makers have been hand-crafting classic shirting using the finest materials and production methods since 1948. As a result such esteemed names as Cole Haan and Britain’s very own Burberry have chosen Gitman Bros as their shirt-maker of choice, recognising the quality and craftsmanship that goes into each US-made shirt.

Pretty Green – Online Now

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few months you will most probably have heard about the new Pretty Green label, founded by Oasis front man Liam Gallagher. A premium clothing line centred around limited edition product, that it’s creator would be happy to wear, Pretty Green is definitely not a rock star’s whim, rather a serious clothing line with real creative conviction behind it.

The content of the debut collection comes as no surprise, mod-influenced parkas, monkey jackets, and scarves sit alongside premium knits and tees that carry the Rubber Sole inspired signature logo. There is a real emphasis placed on the quality of finish and production, and only the best fabrics are used throughout the range. As Liam has famously said, Pretty Green is a product of a “lack of things I would wear” and as such every piece that makes its way into the collection has to get the Gallagher seal of approval first. As such, Pretty Green has a wide appeal that reaches far beyond fans of the band, with styling and finishing that ticks the boxes of the most ardent fashionistas.

Ransom x Adidas – The Never Ending Path

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

Ransom are a Canadian retailer and clothing label created by the founders of the famous Goodfoot and  Nomad stores. Ransom bridges the gap between the exclusive footwear purveyors and one of the best contemporary fashion boutiques in Canada, and is influenced – not surprisingly – by their spectacular surroundings. Canada’s vast, varied, and sometimes harsh environment has shaped the Ransom clothing line, and  the ‘Never Ending Path’ collaboration with Adidas continues very much in this vein.

ransom1

Having  worked together on a number of collaborations involving their Goodfoot sister brand, the relationship between Adidas and the fellows at Ransom was already good, and the creative process was easy, due to a mutual respect and understanding. Centring around footwear that represents the climate, culture, extreme sports and heritage of Canada, the two created a progressive and most importantly, brand new range of durable and considered silhouettes.

ransom4

The Never Ending Path range is an ongoing collaboration with the footwear made to stand the test of time, which is apparent in the five shoes that make up the debut collection. The Dune and Pier shoes are simple, Oxford style high and low tops, made from a range of coloured leathers and suede in a number of different finishes.

ransom5

The Summit boot is the Ransom x Adidas take on classic hiking boots, with D-Lace Locks and an oversized sole, the Summit works in aspects both new and old, to create a shoe that could easily become a classic in its own right .

ransom2

The Valley is the most ’trainer like’ in design, similar to the classic American high-tops of the 50s and 60s but with durability very much in mind, mixing clean, classic lines with a modern, rugged construction. Perhaps the most anticipated shoe in the range is The Creek, a moccasin toed chukka boot, which like the Summit has nods to classic outdoor boot design with a good helping of new details worked in as well.

ransom6

The quality of finish and attention to detail running though the range is apparent straight away, with embossed branding, and embroidered labels atop some of the sturdiest and best executed shoes to be released in some time. A highly anticipated release, we expect to see the Ransom x Adidas Never Ending Path collection to arrive some time very soon, and with limited numbers you’ll have to be very quick!

Nigel Cabourn Autumn 2009 Collection

Saturday, October 10th, 2009

This season has been one that us Novocastrians can be truly proud of, some of the great brands from our area have come to the fore, with hugely successful ranges celebrating their own rich histories. Berghaus Heritage and Barbour – particularly with the Tokihito Yoshida collection – have used their peerless insight and expertise to produce ranges that have been hugely popular across the world, adding to their already burgeoning reputations.

cabournnews1

There is perhaps one other name in North East clothing that stands out even more. Nigel Cabourn is a name that is mentioned in the highest fashion circles, and for good reason. A fashion student during the 1960s ,Cabourn gained success almost instantly with his Cricket Clothing label, and from then on has gone from strength to strength. Cabourn started his now world-renowned eponymous business in 1982, here in his native Newcastle, and since then this proud North Easterner has gone on to work with the likes of Barbour, Next and Alpha, fusing his unique eye for design with his love of historical and military pieces.

Nigel Cabourn’s home-come-office-come-design studio is only 2 miles from our store and we have been lucky enough to have been invited over on a few occasions of late, to look at the huge archive of military and outdoor clothing . The collection spans not only decades, but centuries, and is accompanied by a veritable library of books on military design history, all of which form the catalyst for the Cabourn Heritage range.

cabournnews3

The collection itself centres around British Military Mountain Forces pieces, as well as a range of jackets ands knits based exactly on those worn during Edmund Hillary’s 1953 Everest expedition. This comprises the cameraman jacket, which is a replica of the coat worn by the photographer on the expedition, the knit’s the team wore under there jackets and the very parka worn by Sir Edmund Hillary himself, complete to the final detail. The rest of the collection is made up of some truly fantastic bomber and flight jackets that incorporate fabrics from British legends such as Macintosh and Harris, as well as accessories that replicate the equipment of WWI soldiers.

Both ourselves and Nigel Cabourn are extremely happy to be working together, For us we get to work with one of the most respected names in fashion, while he gets the opportunity to deal with a store based in his home town, and regularly meet up to exchange feedback and ideas. This has allowed us the opportunity to take a number of archive pieces that are not on sale anywhere else as part of our AW09 buy, and working with Nigel we have selected the best pieces to go in our new Hunting Co store and on the website.

New Balance for Norse Projects

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

Copenhagen’s Norse Project’s first opened it’s doors in 2004, and has since become a leading purveyor of the finest in street, skate and fashion wear, causing some major waves that have reached far beyond their native Denmark. Their full debut collection, for Fall/Winter collection has been instore at our new End Hunting Co. for some weeks now and has been very well received, so when we heard news of a colab with Flimby’s finest, we had to get ourselves involved…

Never afraid of a good menage-a-deux, New Balance are always keen to work with new, exciting partners and the New Balance x Norse Projects shoe is no exception. As with all good collaborations this takes the best elements of the original and builds on them, mindful of the design heritage, while looking to add new dimensions.

There are few better starting points than New Balance’s 670 -  the shoe released to celebrate 100 years of production at Flimby – the clean lines and use of patented NB technology established it as an instant classic for good reason. Norse keep the palette subtle, with nods towards the classic Navy and Greys mixed with vibrant Aqua and Teal to give a more contemporary edge, and a typically Norse nautical feel.

Release is set for the 23rd of October and we are looking forward to getting our hands on  this highly limited and brilliantly considered shoe. Created to Improve Life – Good for All Seasons is the Norse Motto, and this 670 is one that is not going to be usurped by trends.

Band of Outsiders Autumn / Winter ’09

Monday, October 5th, 2009

When you name your brand after a Jean-Luc Godard film you are definitely setting a president, the French director who is famous for his pioneering, new wave style was seen as a fore-runner and the epitome of ’cool’ at the time. It is apt then that LA based fashion house Band of Outsiders would take there name from such a source, as they too are now synonymous with cutting edge style, and are the name on the lips of all of modern fashion’s leading lights.

Although Band of Outsiders draw influence from a wide range of sources, there is a definite leaning towards the style icons of the 1950’s and 60’s, and to all things ’preppy’. But there is also a real sophistication, with pointers to classic French, Italian and dare we say, English style in their collections. This diversity is always shown in a brilliantly subtle way, Band of Outsiders’ clothing is unfussy and refined, and as a result timeless and completely wearable.

This has lead to a broad spectrum of famous fashion aficionados being seen in Band of Outsiders, from Kanye West to Jason Schwartzman, Max Minghella and Mark Ronson, it is very much the name to be seen wearing, and for good reason.

Our first delivery of Band of Outsiders is set to reflect the essence of the label, checked flannel and cotton shirts pay homage to Americana, while over dyed twill shirts highlight the simple, clean lines that we associate with the label. All Band of Outsiders garments are finished to the highest specification and are instantly recognisable from the quality of the cut and styling.

We are extremely proud and excited to be stocking Band of Outsiders, and we’re sure those who already familiar with the brand will share in our excitement, and those who weren’t, if you’re a fan of APC or Nom De Guerre, or anything along those lines, you will not be disappointed.

Adidas Consortium – Your City Collection

Monday, October 5th, 2009

October 17th sees the first drop of Adidas’ latest Consortium range. The hotly anticipated ‘Your City’ collection is based on Adidas’ famous City series, and sees them team up with their Consortium partners across the world to re-creating their City’s shoe. The Consortium partners brief was to give these classic silhouettes their own distinctive twist, while keeping the original palettes and shapes in tact. In having to keep within these boundaries, these collaborations vary brilliantly, and in very novel ways from the originals, incorporating the new with the old.

The lads at Solebox had one of the best starting points of all, the Berlin is one of the most loved City Series shoes, and one that has not been subject to a recent re-release. Keeping with the navy and sky colourway with black accents and the famous gum sole, Solebox choose to reverse the original, having the inner as the outer, and vice versa.

Our Transatlantic cousins, take two of the most famous city runners and give considered and reworking to old favourites. The Boston Super and L.A. Trainer are given the premium treatment by Bodega and UNDFTD respectively, with the end product of both coming through as a well-thought out interpretation of the original.

Undefeated have chosen to make their L.A. Trainer predominantly red, still in the classic suede, while keeping the mesh panels in traditional navy, and the famous plugs in red, white and blue. The Boston Super is a more contemporary affair, with Bodega (who’s aZX  ZX8000 was such a success) – giving an almost ‘hiking’ twist to this classic runner, with two tone laces and perforated side panels.

A newcomer to the Consortium fold are Sole Service, based in Oslo, they had the chance to work with one of the lesser known, but no less respected City shoes. Their design is clean and minimal, and definitely lets the trainer do the talking.

As big City series fans, we are hugely excited about this drop, and the following two, and as you can see from the images below, justice has definitely been done to these famous trainers.
